The 'Caminho do Ouro' (Gold Trail) ended at Paraty's docks, bringing immense wealth, but also drawing the attention of pirates and privateers. This era gave birth to the town's fortified churches and the urban grid we see today.

The Coffee Cycle and the 'Great Sleep'

By the 1800s, the gold had dwindled, but coffee was the new king. Wealthy coffee barons built the grand townhouses (sobrados) that still stand. However, when a new railway bypassed Paraty in the late 1800s, the town's economy collapsed. For nearly 100 years, Paraty was effectively 'frozen' in time, accessible only by sea, which ensured its colonial architecture remained untouched by the industrialization seen in Rio and São Paulo.

The UNESCO Rebirth

In 2019, Paraty was named a Mixed World Heritage site—one of only a handful in the world recognized for both its culture and its natural biodiversity.
