Paraty's Cachaça Festival: What to Expect and When to Go

Every August, Paraty hosts the Festival da Cachaça, Cultura e Sabores de Paraty (formerly known as the Festival da Pinga). It is a high-energy celebration of the town's most famous export. Distillers from across the region gather under a massive pavilion to showcase their finest bottles, while the streets come alive with samba, forró, and the aroma of traditional street food.

The Tasting Experience

The main attraction is the grand tasting pavilion. Here, you can buy a commemorative glass and sample small doses from all the major local labels: Maria Izabel, Coqueiro, Paratiana, Engenho D'Ouro, and Maré Alta. It's a unique opportunity to compare different wood-aging styles side-by-side. Tip: Pace yourself. These artisanal spirits often have an ABV of 40% or higher.

The 'Jorge Amado' Fever

While pure cachaça is the star, the Jorge Amado cocktail is the festival's official drink. Named after the famous Brazilian author (whose novel Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon was filmed in Paraty), this drink is a refreshing mix of cachaça, fresh passion fruit, lime, and a hint of clove. It is sweet, tangy, and dangerously drinkable.
